This work was commissioned by property developers, Liberty Properties Trust, for a new building complex in Charleston, SC. The fountain sculpture is coupled with wrought iron and wood benches to provide employees and visitors a tranquil place to relax.

I chose to include a heron with the water fountain to reflect the rich marshland environment surrounding Charleston.

The piece incorporates seven different metals utilizing various techniques of fabrication. The heron itself is primarily done in stainless steel with a heat treated patina. Each individual feather is precisely textured in harmony with the patterning of the actual birds feathers. The heron’s legs are wrought copper, the beak is cast silicon bronze, head feathers are in sterling and the eyes are anodized niobium. The fountain itself has a wrought iron frame and legs with a hand-formed copper basin. The pedestal is fabricated from copper tubing and has a concealed access door for servicing. The internal pump has a self-replenishing function. The bottom of this pedestal terminates in a molded cast bronze ring with custom molded profile. The base and copper work received a verdigris patina. The iron work has an intentional distressed textured finish to emulate the abundant historic ironwork found through out the city.
